Description

Pan Am--a name synonymous with glitch, glamour...financial misfortune. For a period time, it was the face of the sky. It was the aircraft that brought the Beatles to America and was the airliner Stanley Kubrick had in mind when he filmed the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. Its airplanes, logo and company have appeared in movies as diverse as Blade Runner to National Lampoon’s European Vacation. In the Fall of 2011, it will be the bases of the ABC drama "Pan Am" starring Christina Ricci

In many ways, the story of Pan Am is the story of America, as the company itself became the representation to the world of America. The story includes monopolies and betrayals, innovation and competition, first class service and terrible losses. The US government aided the company at its outset, and then turned its back on it at its end. Pan Am’s demise was tragic, as international forces beyond its control led to a series of mistakes, mismanagement and bad investments, that eventually brought it under. In this in depth essay, author Don Harris tells the story of the rise and fall of the most famous airline in the world.

Reviews

  • Very Basic Story of Pan Am

    By Mainstreamjazz
This book was written more for a fifth grade reading level. As an Airline Enthusiast and Amateur Historian, I have read the history of Pan Am in numerous other books. This book was a pretty generalized overview with many gaps. There is an immediate jump to the jet age, an immediate jump to the 747, and the flying boat era isn't really covered in depth. There isn't mention of the battle and government funding to prevent SCADTA from encroaching in the United States. I had much higher expectations of this book. Additionally the book is plagued with many grammatical and spelling errors. Overall I think there are more well written books out there on the subject. If you have never read the story of Pan Am and what a quick overview, this would be a book to start with.
  • Disappointed

    Poorly edited very esoteric.
  • Factually Interesting

This book is very interesting from a factual standpoint. And the way it is written is very easy to read. Otherwise, it is very poorly edited and has spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors galore. Most likely, this could be developed into a very interesting read because the writer makes points that are very salient, such as the things Pan Am gave the industry as a whole. Many of those could have much more added, and more could be learned by the reader.
  • Pretty good

It's not earthshaking or long, but for the price this a quick and interesting read.
  • Who wrote the synopsis for this book???

    By muzzypat
This book is the "bases" for the new TV show??? How about actually reading the words instead of letting the spell checker do the work. It's "basis"….. Spelling gets worse the more we move into the 21st century. I'm embarrassed.
  • Interesting reading, bad editing

This author desperately needs a proofreader. Errors abound throughout, and clumsy wordsmithing occasionally destroys otherwise enchanting details of the golden age of commercial aviation. That said, this book is worth $3.00. It's a fun and fast read, and would be substantially better were it simply crafted with more care.
