Description

Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers join forces to track down a ruthless killer who will do whatever it takes to keep the past buried, in this latest thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author John Sandford.

Doris Grandfelt, an employee at an accounting firm, was brutally stabbed to death . . . but nobody knew exactly where the crime took place. Her body was found the next night, dumped among a dense thicket of trees along the edge of an urban park, eight miles east of St. Paul, Minnesota. Despite her twin sister Lara Grandfelt’s persistent calls to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the killer was never found.

Twenty years later, Lara has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Confronted with the possibility of her own death, she’s determined to find Doris’s killer once and for all. Finally taking matters into her own hands, she dumps the entire investigative file on every true crime site in the world and offers a $5 million reward for information leading to the killer’s arrest. Dozens of true crime bloggers show up looking for both new evidence and “clicks,” and Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers are called in to review anything that might be a new lead.

When one of the bloggers locates the murder weapon, Lucas and Virgil begin to uncover vital details about the killer’s identity. But what they don’t know is the killer lurks in plain sight, and with the true crime bloggers blasting every clue online, the killer can keep one step ahead. As the nation maneuvers the detectives closer to the truth, Lucas and Virgil will find that digging up Doris’s harrowing past might just get them buried instead.

  • Seriously.

End with 60/40? Did I miss something. Read the entire book and end without a conclusion.
  • Perhaps Sandford is done

Maybe, just a Virgil Flowers is tired of being a BCA agent, Sandford is tired of writing novels. It’s too bad, really, because the “bad guy” is well written and the true crime angle is fun. But nobody wants to hear Virgil constantly whining about wanting to quit. And, as many have pointed out, the ending is rushed and unsatisfying. It’s not just the cliffhanger, the entire ending feels rushed and like Sandford is checking plot points off on a list so that he can end the book. A disappointing final (?) book from an author whose books I look forward to every year and a mistreatment of much loved characters.

One of the best in the Prey series…. but there was no ending.. The reader is left dangling.
  • Who wrote this?

Interesting case. Bad ending, if it can be called an ending worthy of being in the Prey series. Totally different style of writing. Almost simplistic. Hardly the quality we’ve come to appreciate in all the previous books of this series. I’ll still get the next one because it’s available but I’ll be suspicious it will be like this one.
  • Ending Was Awful

In what was otherwise a captivating read with great characters in Flowers and Davenport, the ending was just awful. Vergil would never write a novel with so useless an ending.

This story takes off as usual, bad guy, woman, does something bad and the story moves on to an eventual conclusion. However, this story does not have the eventual conclusion, more like being kicked off a cliff and left to drown. The story ends, but there is no resolution, no fire fight, no extreme danger, as Davenport frequently finds himself, nope the story just….stops.It just stops, ends, like the author had to run to the store for some coffee and neglected to come sit down and finish the story. Seems lazy to me. Just sayin’.

This is the first book I read that really left me hanging. Great story but the ending wasn’t what I expected. I hope there is a sequel to this story. I still gave it a 5 star review because I like Virgil and Lucas.
  • Good until the end. Very disappointing ending

Ending very disappointing. Can only presume a setup for a $16 sequel have read many author’s book over the years. This is my last one!

Lucas Davenport and that f——-g Flowers are, if not my favorite fictional characters, easily in the top three. Always look forward to these books being released, and I do hope that a sequel is coming. The ending was mystifying. I needed closure and I didn’t get it. Not sure if I missed something but the victims and their families received no justice or closure, nor the readers, IMHO. But otherwise a good, funny and suspenseful read.
