Description

Geralt the Witcher—revered and hated—holds the line against the monsters plaguing humanity in this collection of adventures, the first chapter in Andrzej Sapkowski’s groundbreaking epic fantasy series that inspired the hit Netflix show and the blockbuster video games.

Geralt is a Witcher, a man whose magic powers, enhanced by long training and a mysterious elixir, have made him a brilliant fighter and a merciless hunter. Yet he is no ordinary killer. His sole purpose: to destroy the monsters that plague the world.

But not everything monstrous-looking is evil and not everything fair is good . . . and in every fairy tale there is a grain of truth.

Reviews

  • Fun collection of short stories

Mostly came into this franchise from the video game. So I figured I’d give the original novels and chances and I’m glad that I did. This was really fun to read. It mostly plays out as short stories the lead character, Geralt is telling. It comes together real nice though. Also made it easy to read. I’ve you’ve never read the books or played the games, then know this is for mature readers. Keep away from children. Otherwise, I can’t read to read the next novel.
  • Never thought I’d be a reader until this!

My wife literally influenced me hard as I do game often and I must say that this book had me hooked from the start. I didn’t think I’d be much into reading in general but the pacing and way this was written just made it so easy to imagine what the scenes looked like with no effort at all. I’m very impressed and with everyone saying the video games are critically acclaimed while also staying close to the source material, I know this series is going to be amazing. Other reviewers will definitely say the same.
  • Not what was expected

While this “beginner Witcher book” was a fun read, I found myself a bit let down by the constant poke and pillage of well-known fairy tales. Being a novice to the Witcher series, I simply did not expect that. Will I continue reading the series? Perhaps. Perhaps not. I’ll give it some thought and maybe someone will read this review and convince me to do so.

I was worried about the translation but needn’t have been. It was well worth the time.

After finishing the third season of Witcher on Netflix I decided to read the stories that inspired the series. I’d seen how bad the story could be written, now I wanted to see how well it was originally written. Thank you Netflix for inspiring me to read a well crafted, entertains story so different from what I watched.

This book is the original and the Netflix show is an adaptation. However, the show does a great job of complimenting this book beautifully! The book is a tour de force of Geralt’s adventures that you can totally imagine in high def thanks to the show. Some of the adventures in the book should have been more faithfully adapted in the show like the scene with the Djinn. But live-action is constrained by budgets and technical/effects/CGI challenges—I get that. That’s why I am very pleased to go deeper into the world of The Witcher with these books while I watch the show… Time for ‘Sword of Destiny’!
