Rendall Garrett was an American science fiction and fantasy author. He was a prolific contributor to several science fiction magazines.
He had written a lot of science fiction novels, short stories, poems and parodies, but he is best-know by his Lord Darcy books, the novel Too Many Magicians and two short story collections.
This book is one of his shorter science-fiction stories, set in the future.
Xedii is a small agrarian, feudal planet that is ruled by a system of baronial estates. One day it is attacked by a technologically advanced planet that offers to the people of Xedii freedom. The attack develops into interstellar war whose object is to control the main export of anticancer drug, on that way freeing the common working man.
The story of Xedii is told by a labor supervisor on one of the farms on the planet and focuses on the life of the men there and the effect the war has on them.
