Discourses by Epictetus is one of the most important works of Stoic philosophy, offering a deep exploration of ethics, virtue, and how to live a meaningful life. Written by the Greek philosopher Epictetus and compiled by his student Arrian around 108 CE, the Discourses are a collection of Epictetus’ teachings, discussions, and dialogues with his students on various topics related to self-mastery, resilience, and how to achieve tranquility in life. Epictetus himself was born into slavery but later gained his freedom and became a prominent teacher of Stoicism in Rome and then Nicopolis in Greece. His teachings emphasize the importance of focusing on what is within our control (our thoughts, actions, and attitudes) and accepting what is beyond our control (external events, other people's actions, and natural occurrences). This central idea is a hallmark of Stoic thought and is presented in a practical, accessible way in the Discourses.
