The Mark of Zorro (1919) by Johnston McCulley is a classic tale of adventure, action, and justice that introduced the world to one of the most iconic masked heroes in popular culture. Set in Spanish California, McCulley’s novel centers on Diego de la Vega, a seemingly mild-mannered aristocrat who, by night, transforms into the swashbuckling vigilante known as Zorro. Armed with a rapier, unmatched agility, and a quick wit, Zorro defends the oppressed and battles corrupt officials in a story brimming with daring exploits, romance, and a strong sense of justice.
The novel opens in the early 19th century, during a time when Spanish California is under the rule of an oppressive and corrupt colonial government. Diego de la Vega, who lives in the city of Los Angeles, appears to be a wealthy, disinterested nobleman. However, beneath this façade, he secretly fights for the rights of the poor and the oppressed as Zorro, leaving his trademark "Z" mark slashed into his enemies' belongings, clothing, or even their flesh. Zorro's daring escapades are aimed at exposing the corruption of local officials, such as the tyrannical Don Rodrigo, who holds power through cruelty and fear.McCulley’s novel follows Zorro as he attempts to right the wrongs of the political system while simultaneously navigating his personal life, which includes a love interest in the beautiful and spirited Lolita Pulido, the daughter of a local innkeeper. The story is filled with masked sword duels, exciting chases, clever escapes, and tense confrontations. The dynamic between Zorro and Diego adds an element of mystery and intrigue, as no one suspects that the two are the same person.
