Home / The Subjection of Women
Mill had a reputation for radicalism, and nowhere is this more apparent than his advocacy for women's rights. While some in British society agreed with Mill that patriarchal attitudes were out of step with the times, few went as far as he did in advocating suffrage and education as the keys to a better society. In Mill's thinking, women would only be able to adequately pursue their self-interests if they were able to learn and vote. While Mill does not always manage to escape the prejudices of his time, his vigorous defense of the rights of women stands as one of his most powerful and enduring works.
