I read this book before visiting Cusco and Machu Picchu. It gave me such a great understanding and appreciation of the Incas. Much better than any of our tour guides. They should read it !

Well researched book. Dispels many myths of the conquest by the Spanish. Great read.

Well worth reading as a compliment to a visit to the Peruvian Andes. Macquarie ties together many stories of the Inca region, Cusco, Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Machu Picchu and onward downriver and to the northwest of this area. In fact, it ties together Lima and much of the rest of modern day Peru turning sightseeing into an education (really a wonderful way to travel). Politics, history, culture, cartography, cuisine, language wrapped up into a gift for the wanderer.

I read the printed version of this book and it was beautifully written and riveting. It tells a story of how several dozens of Spaniards vanquished a huge and mysterious empire. the characters are drawn vividly and the sequence of events are hard to put down the book. Some chapters are difficult to read due to the hopelessness and misery of the Inca people. If you are a history buff you will mightily enjoy reading it.
