Description

#1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts explores the wilds of the Grand Tetons—and the mysteries of love, murder, and madness—in this engrossing and passionate novel.

The sole survivor of a brutal crime back East, Reece Gilmore settles in Angel’s Fall, Wyoming—temporarily, at least—and takes a job at a local diner. One day, while hiking in the mountains, she peers through her binoculars and sees a couple arguing on the bank of the churning Snake River. And suddenly, the man is on top of the woman, his hands around her throat...

By the time Reece reaches a gruff loner named Brody farther down the trail, the pair is gone. And when authorities comb the area where she saw the attack, they find no trace that anyone was even there.

No one in Angel’s Fall seems to believe Reece—except Brody, despite his seeming impatience and desire to keep her at arm’s length. When a series of menacing events makes it clear that someone wants her out of the way, Reece must put her trust in Brody—and herself—to find out if there is a killer in Angel’s Fall, before it’s too late.

I have read Nora Roberts for over 35 years. There is no way she wrote this book as it stands. Maybe she wrote it as a novella and someone else filled in the untold amount of tripe that filled this book. Many times I skipped 20 or more pages and didn’t miss a thing. Also the machismo throughout is typical for a book written in the 90’s which leads me to wonder how long this story sat on a shelf before it was revived. Maybe it was expanded so TV could make a movie. A terrible example of Robert’s work. Try The Witness, smart woman, smart man, great story.

About 2/3 thru the story and I figured out who the murderer was and why at 1/3 thru :( She usually keeps me on my toes, especially as JD Robb, even if I do know the killer (Thankless in Death told you who, why, and the future from pg 1 but it wasn't any less interesting, well not much), but she didn't even come across as crazy/mentally taxed in the beginning (what single woman in a new place doesn't check the locks and worry a bit paranoid-ly?, much less one involved at one point in a crime where she was a victim) & the doubting-crazy storyline got old fast and was one of the things to give away the killer. Also, I found myself not really liking the older men in the town at various points because of their doubts that wasn't even as informed as the sheriff or boss on her history at the time. The landscape is nice and if this detective-crime genre isn't your thing you may be inexperienced enough to really love this, otherwise it's just Ok and really really long.
