Home / Summer Magic (The Women's Company Library)
“We'll never speak of ‘last times,’ Gilly, or where would any of us be? We'll always think of ‘next’ times." Meet Nancy Carey. Nancy is the the exuberant, quixotic, dramatic, and kind-hearted eldest child of the Carey family. After the death of her father, their home life becomes further complicated when Julia, their snobbish cousin, comes to live with them. As the family grows up in the quaint hills of rural Maine, there’s adventure, laughter, and even a little romance. Nancy and the family suffer many hardships, but come they'll come to realize happiness has little to do with wealth. As charming as a girl in a frilly summer frock, as delicious as an ice cream social, as carefree as an old-fashioned sing-a-long around the player piano, we know you'll love Nancy as much as we do. Kate Douglas Wiggin was an American educator and author of children’s stories, most notably the classic children’s novel 'Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm'. She started the first free kindergarten in San Francisco in 1878 (the Silver Street Free Kindergarten).
